Register for a CRA account

Step 1 of 9

Sign in with the owner's personal CRA user ID and password. If you don't have a personal CRA account yet, register for one first.

Just as individuals have My Account, a corporation can use My Business Account to view its returns, balances, payments and CRA mail online.

Before you start

  • The owner or director needs a personal CRA account (My Account). If you don't have one, register for it first.
  • The CRA currently lets you add a business only if its business number has a GST/HST (RT) or corporation income tax (RC) account with at least one return already processed. A brand-new corporation may need to wait until its first return has been assessed.
  • Have the corporation's T2 return or notice of assessment at hand — you will need a few figures from it.

Steps

  1. Go to the CRA sign-in page and sign in with the owner's personal CRA user ID and password (or Sign-In Partner).
  2. Answer the security question if asked, check your last sign-in details and click Next.
  3. On the Welcome page, click + Add account, then choose Business account.
  4. Choose Add business number — not "Business Registration Online", which is for registering a new business.
  5. Your name and SIN are filled in. Enter the corporation's 9-digit business number (the digits before "RC") and click Submit.
  6. To confirm that you own the business, enter details from a processed return, for example:
    • Program account type: Corporation income tax (RC), account number 0001
    • Return period end date (YYYY-MM-DD) and return type: T2
    • One line from the return and its amount — for example Schedule 200, line 760 (net provincial tax payable), which also appears on the notice of assessment

Once accepted, the corporation appears on your Welcome page.

Tip: if the figures are not accepted, contact us — we can look them up from the return we prepared.
